Terengganu Geography & Demographics


Terengganu is situated in north-eastern Penisular Malaysia, and is bordered in the northwest by Kelantan, the southwest & west by Pahang, and the east by the South China Sea. Several outlying islands, including Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Redang, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Tenggol, are also a part of the state. The state has a total area of 12,955 km².

Terengganu has a population of 1,080,286 (2006 census), of which Malays make up 94.7% of the population and Chinese, 2.6%, while Indian 0.2% and other ethnic groups comprise the remainder, 2.4%. In the year 2000, the state's population was only 48.7% urban ; the majority lived in rural areas. By the 2005 census, the proportions had changed significantly, with 51%
of the population living in urban areas and 49% in the rural areas. Terengganu is divided into seven administrative districts (called Daerah in Malay), of which consist of Kemaman, Dungun, Marang, Kuala Terengganu, Ulu Terengganu, Kuala Nerus, Setiu and Besut.

The people of Terengganu generally speak Terengganese Malay, which is distinct from standard Malay and Kelantanese Malay, except for those in Besut district and Perhentian Island who speak Kelantanese.

By Car

Driving by car with friends or the loved ones can be pretty much an interesting trip. Aside from the greeneries that can be seen through out your journey, the fresh air and unpolluted countryside can offer a soughtful experience. Once you get to Terengganu road, the beautiful beaches and blue waters welcome you.

KL to KT (approx. 455 km) thru Karak Highway and Lebuhraya Pantai Timur
Singapore/Johor Bahru to KT (approx. 562 km) thru Labis - Segamat - Kuantan
- Kuala Terengganu (The coastal route: Highway 3 Head to Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Kuala Rompin, Pekan, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu.)
Penang to KT (approx. 460 km): thru highway Penang on the East West Highway via Grik - Jertih - Kuala Terengganu.

By Bus

Express coach departs daily from all of the major cities and towns in the peninsular. Travel from Kuala Lumpur (6 hours), Singapore and Johor Bharu (8 hours), and Penang (7 hours). The journey includes 2 rest stops or more along the journey for foods, refreshments and toilet stops.

By Air

From Kuala Lumpur:
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and Air Asia offer daily flights from KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) to Kuala Terengganu Airport.Firefly Air flies in from Penang to Kuala Terengganu connecting to Subang Airport daily. Also Firefly Air has a new daily route from Subang to Kerteh in kemaman. Journey by air takes approximately 45 minutes.
Berjaya Air operates daily direct flight from Subang Airport (Kuala Lumpur) to Redang Island takes approximately 1 hour.

From Singapore:
